ATLEU launches ATLAW, a new drive to improve advice for survivors

ATLEU launched their new bespoke training programme, ATLAW this week. The programme is designed specifically for immigration and public law advisers who work under a legal aid contract and are committed to assisting survivors of trafficking and slavery.

Through this programme, ATLEU aims to improve the quality, availability and sustainability of legal representation for survivors of trafficking across the UK. The advice sector faces unprecedented challenges due to financial cuts and chronic under-funding. As a result, the current needs of trafficking survivors simply aren’t being met.

ATLEU has recruited a group of legal advisors to help them develop a sustainable approach to providing legal advice to survivors and to be a catalyst for positive change across the advice sector.

The three month programme includes training, mentoring, practical legal resources, and ongoing second-tier advice to develop advisors’ confidence, skills and know-how. At its core is an approach focused on providing quality advice that secures positive outcomes for survivors, while delivering sustainable legal aid income on trafficking cases, reducing the need to offset costs or work unpaid.

The programme sits beside our existing online training series for support providers that gives an introduction to modern slavery and immigration law as well as more focused sessions on issues such as legal challenges and safeguarding..

We plan to run another ATLAW group next year. To find out more about the programme, or to register your interest, please email: training@atleu.org.uk
